Week 31 challenge | Kitchen challenge | Buying bulk items

It’s kitchen time! Thinking about making the most used room in your home more sustainable can be overwhelming. So we’re breaking this task down into smaller bites (subtle kitchen pun for ya) over the next four weeks.

This week’s challenge is buying in bulk.

When grocery shopping this week, stop by your local bulk foods store or your grocer’s bulk foods section and stock up on essentials like flour and sugar and even get new snack ideas for your kid’s lunches.

Not only will you save on your weekly grocery bill, but you’ll cut down on the amount of packaging used.

Want to kick this challenge up a notch? Get even more eco-friendly by bringing your own reusable containers to fill. Use what you have at home or get creative with storage containers from your local MCC Thrift shop. Another bonus? Some shops like Bulk Barn in Canada will give you a discount for choosing to use refillable containers.

Did you try this challenge? Post a photo of your bulk food purchase on social media with the hashtag #thrifty50 and tag us with @MCCThrift. We'd love to see how you're doing!

Until next Wednesday,
Lori Giesbrecht
